COTTON’S JOURNEY:
Fiber to Fabric - Boll to Bolt - Seed to You!
Three Hands On Stations
Classes Rotate:
1. Travel through a HAY MAZE with centers where children plant a (cotton) seed.
at other stations they will water and shine light on plants. They will climb over and under bales of hay
to avoid weeds and the deadly boll weevil.
2. FUN with FABRICS STATION Children will learn to weave wool yarn and dye cotton. They will write their name on a handkerchief size square of muslin. The folded fabric, placed in doubled Ziplock bags, will be squirted with dye by an adult. Later at school the teacher will rinse and dry the dyed bandana for the child to take home.
3. See the BARNYARD ANIMALS and play the FARM ANIMAL GAME. This game is modeled after a TV show with the teacher answering an animal question, asking the class or ‘calling an expert’ fieldtrip parent. Questions will be both fun and educational. For example: Do goats really eat tin cans?
A correct answer earns a vegetable for the grocery cart. The children will call out the vegetable name and focus on healthy eating promoted in the new UT “Keep Moving” health campaign. Please note this will not be a petting zoo and children will not come in contact with the animals however they will enjoy seeing them.
